PRE-GAME
As part of Fan Appreciation Night, several lucky fans will win the jerseys off the back of the players at the conclusion of tonight’s game. But to truly show their appreciation for the fans that have supported them all season long, the Vancouver Canucks (21-15-4) plan on leaving everything they’ve got on the ice well before that when they host the recently revitalized Dallas Stars (16-16-5) at General Motors Place.
Appreciation for Friday night’s effort by the Canucks may depend on whether you’re a glass half-full or half-empty type. While three out of four possible points on a two-game road trip is nothing to scoff at, especially when playing on back-to-back nights, you can bet the Canucks aren’t exactly satisfied after missing a golden opportunity for two points after falling 4-3 in a shootout to a Thrashers team mired near the bottom of the NHL standings.
They will try for a much better result tonight when they face the Stars for the first time this season, but they may have to do so without the services of Mattias Ohlund after the workhorse defenceman left Friday’s game with an undisclosed injury. If Ohlund is unable to go, expect Lawrence Nycholat to return to the lineup after sitting out the previous two games as a healthy scratch. Defenceman Sami Salo remains on the shelf with a broken rib. Despite Friday’s shootout loss, the Canucks can still earn points in three consecutive games for the first time in nearly a month. If that’s not motivation enough, the Canucks should at least get a more enthusiastic effort from the second line of Kyle Wellwood, Steve Bernier and Mason Raymond after the trio were singled-out by Coach V following Friday’s loss for their lackluster performance in recent games.
FIRST PERIOD
20:00 – What’s up everybody! Derek here, glad to have you along.
18:23 – A massive TURRRRRRCCCCCCOOOO chant to start the game and Marty has only made one save so far – I love these fans!
17:49 – 1-0 CANUCKS – K-K-K-KYLE WELLWOOD! Now there’s the secondary scoring Alain Vigneault was talking about. Steve Bernier flew down the right wing and tossed the puck on net where a falling Wellwood used his quick hands to tip it home. Nice one – that’s Welly’s 14th of the season.
17:10 – You want a prediction, hey kokko…I’m feeling a 3-2 overtime win for the Canucks. U?
16:11 – Jason LaBarbera is in net for the third straight game and Cutz just made a nice save there. Brad Richards ripped the puck in front of the Vancouver goal where Loui Eriksson tipped it but Cutz was there for the pad save.
14:52 – I should mention that I just saw Brett Hull in the press box. I passed him in the hall and thanked him for making such great GT sleds when I was young – kidding, of course, but those things were AWESOME!
13:13 – Mattias Ohlund was doubtful, but he’s in the line-up and playing like a firecracker so far. He just thwarted the efforts of Mike Ribeiro by out waiting the forward and taking away his shot on goal.
12:39 – It’s Fan Appreciation Night at GM Place and while I’m saddened that you all couldn’t be here tonight to receive a round of applause from the Canucks, I know you’re out there and Vancouver is lucky to have you as fans! Thanks for being so great and so hardcore!
12:16 – You’re right Lollipop!, it is snowing buckets out there. I’m from Manitoba so it’s no shocker to me, but there are a lot of frightened BC people out there right now. It’s really kind of mean to dump that much snow though because Vancouver doesn’t have to the means to handle it properly…I think there is one snowplow in the entire city!
9:55 – Demitra just recorded a shot on goal and although Turco didn’t flinch, it was good to see the Canucks mounting an attack. Since scoring the Canucks have been run over by the Stars, shots are now 8-4 for Dallas.
8:32 – That Demitra shot got past Turco and was extremely dangerous, too bad it flew through the crease and out the other side.
7:00 – Hey Rajan16, Jaffray and Bolduc are both in the line-up tonight.
5:46 – Alex Burrows with an inspired steal from a pair of Stars just inside the Dallas blueline. He carried the puck in on what looked like a play of the game in the making, but was stick checked and lost the puck before letting go a shot.
5:04 – Did I EVER see the Canada game last night SANFORDMAKESME NERVOUS – WHAT A GAME! Seriously, Team Canada is all heart and it’s what allowed them to beat Russia.
4:40 – Another snazzy save by Cutz, his 20th of the game, prior to some rough stuff behind the Vancouver net. No penalties on the play but the Stars and Canucks are both starting to flex some muscle.
4:20 – 2-0 CANUCKS – A FOURTH LINE BEAUTY! That was just a gritty effort by Jaffs, he gained control of the puck behind the Dallas bet, swung outfront and passed it to Darcy Hordichuk who ripped it home. The Great Hordini strikes again! He’s now got four goals on the year. Alex Bolduc also drew an assist on the goal.
3:40 – Sorry for making you miss the snow kevv xD. Can I make it up to you by mailing you a box full of snow from outside GM Place?

1:20 – Shots are now 12-11 for Vancouver after a dominating five minutes of play. Dallas looks lost and confused right now, they’ll be lucky to get out of this period with only two goals against.
00:09 – 2-1 CANUCKS – Blame that one on me, I’ll take all the blame. Just seconds after I nag on Dallas sucking, Mike Modano makes me eat my words with his 13th goal of the season. My bad.
00:00 – That’s all he wrote for the first period. It was a solid 20 minutes for the Canucks, secondary scoring is what Alain Vigneault wanted and it’s what he got with two goals in the period. With the exception of that late goal it was a flawless period for the home team. Shots are 13-12 for Dallas.
SECOND PERIOD
20:00 – Sorry for not responding sooner bob, Jason LaBarbera is in net – we refer to him as Cutz.
20:00 – My apologizes to KezCanucks, I knew not to say something like that and no worries about Mats Sundin offsite , I’m guessing he plays Wednesday in Edmonton.
18:18 – These teams are circling each other like pray right now, they’re just getting a feel for each other before pouncing. (Clearly there has been no action so far and I needed something to type…)
17:04 – Ribeiro had the left side of the net open, he just shot the puck wide on that one. This game was inches from being tied.
15:23 – Finally some action! A solid chance for the Canucks as Vancouver’s third line went to work. Burrows worked his way in close on Turco and let go a tricky shot, the netminder grabbed it but then bobbled it to the ice before diving to save a sure goal. Great shift there.
14:55 – I despise Turco, I’ve gotta give him credit for that save though. Shane O’Brien destroyed a shot from inside the blueline and Marty T snagged it out of the air with his glove.
13:14 – The Stars are sniffing around in the Canucks zone. A harmless shot on goal was just ticked less than an inch wide of an open goal by Brian Sutherby, Cutz had no chance on that one. Dallas is coming close this period.
12:07 – It is Jerseys Off Our Backs NIght Malandro , so it only makes sense that I give away the nice new shirt and tie I am wearing today. The problem is that I only own one shirt and one tie, I’ll be nearly naked without this combo and no one wants that. Maybe next year?
11:57 – To clarify: Cutz is from LALA, but that is not his nickname, he’s much too manly for that. (Cutz = Barber = cuts hair)
11:11 – Intense pressure from the Canucks. First an Alex Edler point shot sailed just wide, then Demitra and the Sedins were buzzing.
10:44 – TURRRRRRRRCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
10:26 – Just realized there haven’t been any penalties called tonight – what’s going on? Yes, Shane O’Brien is playing.
10:00 – Apparently I have the ability to influence this game as Dallas was just called for a penalty with Chris Conner now in the box.
8:11 – You and I both daveyboy, Cutz has filled in nicely for the Canucks. I haven’t been impressed with the number of bench minors Vancouver has taken though as the team just took another for too many men on the ice.
6:46 – Solid extra effort there by Kesler to clear the puck, he even followed it up with by shoving James Neal to the ice, it was nice. The refs didn’t agree that it was nice and Kesler will sit for two.
6:09 – 2-2 TIE – POWER PLAY GOAL – Riberio with a quick one-timer off a soft pass from Jere Lehtinen. Cutz had no chance on that one, but I think we should refrain from calling him SuperCutz for now – sorry NucksFan.
4:22 – Close one there. Burrows shuffled the puck on net and caught Turco napping (or fantasizing about playing for a good team), it was lost in his equipment and almost crossed the line.
3:48 – TURCO SUCKS, TURCO SUCKS, TURCO SUCKS – the chant is weak but they are right below me so it’s very entertaining to me. I’m a simpleton, clearly.
2:20 – Looooong shot from Jannik Hansen, Turco deflected it out of play quite easily but that was a bullet. Shots are now 22-21 for the Nucks with 12 Vancouver players testing Marty T at least once.
2:06 – Hansen again, this time he tipped the puck juuuuuuuuuuuuust wide of the goal off a Kevin Bieksa point blast.
1:21 – I’m sitting in seat 29 in the press box at GM Place ur MOM . Turco is directly below me with Cutz to my far right. Great view!
1:00 – It’s 25 mill SANFORDMAKESME NERVOUS! Every game!
00:00 – No late goals for Dallas is the good news, the bad is that they did beat Cutz once to even things up through 40 minutes. Shots are 23-22 after the second.
THIRD PERIOD
20:00 – Aaaaaaaaaand we’re back! Great to have you along DEREKRULES, love the name.
19:31 – Kesler with a quick shot on net that Turco gobbled up with his glove.
19:17 – Daniel backhanded a pass to Henrik at the side of the net but his shot sailed high and wide. Awesome pressure by the Canucks right now.
18:09 – THE SAVE OF THE GAME BY CUTZ! Conner hit Steve Ott with a snap pass, Ott one-timed it on net and LaBarbera stretched across to make the save. The red light may have even gone on that looked like such a sure goal.
16:28 – Welcome Rude C Pathius, great to have you on board tonight!
13:55 – After Bolduc pick pocketed Turco behind his own net and almost set up a scoring chance, Cutz made a nice save on a long slapper by Toby Petersen.
13:05 – Ah c-r-a-p (didn’t want to get moderated too) – Bieksa is in the box for delay of game after shooting the puck up, up and over the glass. I hate those penalties.
11:40 – WOW OH WOW! That could be the save of LaBarbera’s career. After an initial stop, the puck bounced to Ribeiro who was parked to the left of the goal, as he went to put it home Cutz reached his glove over and DENIED him. That was robbery at its finest.
11:40 – Wow, I’m still in shock over that save.
11:40 – NO GOAL – they checked, but alas the puck never crossed the line.
11:40 – Was that the save of the season?
10:56 – I also heard goat as his nickname, but seeing as how they used him as a scapegoat when they lost, I thought it was crummy to use it. I’m on board with Cutz (and kind of La La La LaBarbera haha)
9:51 – Pressure from the Canucks just led to a penalty to Conner of the Stars, Vancouver now has a chance to take control of this game with a power play goal. The Canucks are 0-for-1 so far.
8:19 – Great puck control, but nothing doing so far. Vancouver has missed the net three times and had three shots blocked before hitting the net.
7:29 – If you can’t hit the net, you can’t score – that’s like physics or something. No shots on goal, no goals on the power play. This game is going down to the wire.
5:29 – I am now accepting predictions on who will score the game-winner, so far I’ve heard an O’Brien prediction…I’m going with Mason Raymond.
3:44 – Neither teams wants to make the mistake that will lead to the game clinching goal. As a result some timid hockey is being played right now. Both teams seem to be playing for overtime…
2:23 – Shot there by Edler, but he waited too long before pulling the trigger. Shame, that play had potential.
1:22 – Decent shot from the point by Ohlund. He ripped a fast shot low that Turco saw all the way and ate up with his glove.
1:00 – LAST MINUTE OF PLAY IN THE THIRD PERIOD
00:00 – High ho, high ho it’s off to OT we go.
OVERTIME
4:10 – Sometimes I don’t think Edler could shoot a puck into water from the beach – he just sailed a shot way wide of the goal after a nice shift by the Sedins.
3:03 – Nice save there by Cutz on Matt Niskanen before Raymond streaked in and ripped a puck on goal from a bad angle.
1:49 – The teams are going end to end without much action.
1:37 – Cutz with another monster save, his glove did all the work finding a flying puck and tucking it away nicely. He’s made 31 saves tonight.
00:20 – WHO IS THIS GUY? LaBarbera with another two unbelievable saves right after the puck squeaked through the crease and almost found the back of the net. Derek hearts Cutz.
