I got into Vancouver last night and seriously, all I did was go get groceries and that’s about it. I needed to get some rest so I could get ready for today and the rest of the week.
The staff here gave us a quick breakdown of the week and brief intro to the camp and it’s definitely all very exciting – especially with this being my first NHL camp (and also my first blog!). We’ve got two practices and two games so it’ll go by really quick.
I’m just going to try to play the best that I can and try not to get the emotions too high. My goal is to keep doing what I do and hopefully get invited to main camp. But mostly, I’m just hoping to get some experience, it’s my first NHL camp so it’s all about learning and getting comfortable.
Without a doubt, I’m most looking forward to the games in Edmonton. I’m from a town called Forestburg in Alberta – about three hours away from Calgary – so my family’s going to come out and watch the games. There’s going to be about 15 people coming out to watch but hopefully they won’t be too loud – I mean I don’t hear them when I’m on the ice but I’m sure other people can hear them.
Naturally, I’m a little nervous but it hasn’t really hit me yet. I’m sure once the games start, I’ll get more nervous but it’s the best part so I can’t wait.
It’s hard to tell how different this camp will be compared to when I was here in July for the summer conditioning camp because we didn’t do that much on-ice stuff last time but the level of the players here is very evident. Everyone here is so good and the level is very high so it’s much more competitive than back in Minnesota. I’m just excited to get more into camp and hopefully show the coaches what I’m capable of doing on the ice.
This summer pretty much just consisted of training. I made the move to the big city, Calgary, to do my training because there’s not much in my small town but it was really good for me and I had a very productive summer.
When I’m away, I think I miss the farm and just being home with my parents and my dog. Growing up on a farm, I used to have to help out with the farm work a lot but not so much anymore because I’m not around as much but when I am, I like help my dad out. Farm work is definitely more of like a chore than something you do for fun but I don’t anybody actually likes it. I usually go back home every weekend to see my parents so I keep in touch.
Aside from that, my only vacation this summer was to Banff. It was really nice just to get away with some of my friends. It wasn’t my first time there but it was my first trip staying there by myself. The weather was beautiful and we did so much while we there – hiking, canoeing, sightseeing, you name it.
That’s it for now but I’ll check in tomorrow with a new blog.
