PRE GAME
After a humbling 5-1 loss to the Coyotes on Saturday night, the Vancouver Canucks (38-24-9) look for a much better effort tonight in the Lone Star State when they visit the slumping Dallas Stars (33-31-8) in a game with plenty of playoff implications for both teams.
The Canucks may be one of the NHL’s hottest teams for the better part of the last two months but if they had any thoughts of resting on their laurels from now through the end of the regular season, then Saturday night should have served as a big wake-up call. The Canucks were thoroughly out-classed by a Coyotes team that entered the night 20 points behind them in the standings and with very little to play for. In the process, the Canucks saw their four-game win streak come to an abrupt halt but their road futility streak extended to four games (0-3-1).
They will try to pick up their first win in their six-game road swing tonight when they close out their season series against a Stars team that is looking to snap out of a funk of their own. While the Canucks are jockeying for positioning in the playoff picture looking to snatch home-ice advantage in the first round, their opponents tonight are hoping just to get invited to the dance – a proposition growing dimmer by the game.
FIRST PERIOD
20:00 – What’s up everybody! Derek here, working on my selective memory – 5-1 loss to the Coyotes? What 5-1 loss to the Coyotes? The road winning streak starts tonight for Vancouver, despite being 1-6-2 in Dallas since 2003-04, the Canucks will pull out a win tonight. I’ll say 3-2 Canucks.
20:00 – As noted in today’s Canucks Report, Ossi Vaananen will make his Canucks debut tonight, he’ll slot in beside Kevin Bieksa and replace Shane O’Brien, a healthy scratch.
19:59 – Herrrrrrre we go!
18:45 – Scoring first is always important but it’s a must for the Canucks tonight. Vancouver has given up the first goal in all four of their last road games, all loses, and is 10-17-3 overall when trialing early.
18:19 – Roberto Luongo just took a careless penalty as he played the puck outside the trapezoid to put the Canucks on the penalty kill.
16:51 – WOW WHAT A SAVE! Brendan Morrison had time to get that shot off into the empty net, but Lui dove to rob BMo of his 500th career point. That was a beauty.
16:08 – No goal for the Stars there, but they peppered the Canucks with four shots.
15:17 – 1-0 STARS – Morrison stayed on the ice after that power play and it just payed off with a big goal. The puck bounced off the boards and went right to Morrison. That’s point #500 of his career.
14:14 – No offence to speak of for the Canucks since Ryan Kesler and Pavol Demitra tested Marty Turco early.
12:43 – I’m with you luongo #1 Fan, that was definitely a missed call by McCormick. He must be traveling with the Canucks because he was pretty bad in the Coyotes game on Saturday as well.
11:20 – Vancouver’s third line with a nice drive, they worked the puck around in the Dallas zone before losing it. Sad when Johnson, Pyatt and Hordichuk are the most dangerous Canucks so far.
10:01 – I love that idea hungryman, get to it!
9:28 – Power play upcoming for the Canucks as Fabian Brunnstrom just spun Kyle Wellwood around. Brunnstrom will sit for two or less as Vancouver goes to work on the man advantage for the first time tonight.
9:11 – A pair of quick point shots from Mats Sundin; the first was tipped by Kesler wide, the second was gloved by Turco. Shots are now 9-3 for Dallas.
8:54 – 1-1 TIE – POWER PLAY GOAL – Demitra hit Sundin with a pass from the blueline, Mats then found Kesler sitting in front of Turco, he took the pass and rifled it past Turco. Mad Marty was out of position so that was an easy score for Kesler.
8:02 – Alex Burrows and Steve Ott just squared off in front of the Dallas bench. These two had been yipping all game, so this scrap is far from shocking. Burrows is still mad about Ott’s hit on Demitra last week and he enacted a little revenge for it there. Both players get five for fighting.
6:23 – The Canucks continue to look weary in this opening period, not sure what it is but Vancouver is playing very tentative hockey. The Canucks are playing like they’re trying not to lose instead of gunning for the win. I’ll text AV and make sure he wakes them up at the break.
6:23 – Not sure what I’m saying Canucian; there is simply no killer instinct from the road warriors so far tonight.
4:27 – The Canucks are having a lot of trouble clearing the zone and it just led to a pair of Stars chances from James Neal. Luongo had to come up big twice, first with his shoulder, then with a Hasek-like sprawl. Shots are now 13-5 Big D.
3:13 – Daniel Sedin is down on the ice hold his face, he just got clipped by the stick of Mark Fistric. Danny seems to be alright, he’s just leaking a bit from the mouth. Good news is Vancouver gets a four-minute minor out of it.
2:19 – Nothing doing on the power play so far; Daniel has remained in the game, he’ll get fixed up during the first period intermission.
1:33 – 2-1 CANUCKS – POWER PLAY GOAL – OH DANNY BOY! Blood on the sweater and all, the puck just went in off Daniel’s skate and past Turco! Who said the Sedins aren’t tough?
1:33 – That’s a big goal, Vancouver is now 2-for-2 on the power play tonight and 4-for-4 over the last two games against Dallas.
00:00 – That period started with soft play from the Canucks, but they cranked it up late and now lead after 20 minutes. Looking back, that period had a little bit of everything as Luongo made a pair of great saves, Burrows dropped the mitts and Vancouver scored twice. Shots are 14-7 for the Stars.
00:00 – I haven’t given you anything to watch of late, so how about this gem from our old friend Judy Grimmes. Just Kidding.
SECOND PERIOD
20:00 – The Canucks start the second on the power play for 24 seconds.
19:07 – Vancouver didn’t score in the early going while up a man, but Stéphane Robidas just put the Canucks back on the power play for holding. The Canucks have two goals on five power play shots so far.
18:22 – 3-1 CANUCKS – POWER PLAY GOAL – Kevin Bieksa blasted a shot that ended up being a pass to Henrik Sedin and he simply re-directed in past Turco. That was all Bieksa, a great heads up play from the D-man and it led to Hank’s 16th goal of the season. Daniel also drew an assist on that goal giving the twins four points tonight.
16:45 – Not much to say about Vaananen so far dave, he’s played five shifts and is a minus-1 with two hits. Not sure if we’ll see the real Ossi for a few games, but I hope I’m wrong and he can make an instant impact.
15:27 – Taylor Pyatt for holding puts the Stars on the power play.
14:50 – Nice one Qris, that was swell.
14:00 – After some intense Dallas pressure that forced Lui to make a nice save at the side of the goal, Mason Raymond and Ryan Johnson broke out on offence and James Neal had to hook Johnson to stop him from converting a Raymond pass. The teams are at 4-on-4 for a few seconds before the Canucks get a power play.
13:03 – That power play was short lived. This time the Stars broke in shorthanded and Mattias Ohlund was forced to hold Mike Modano to avoid a Dallas scoring opportunity. Back to 4-on-4 we go.
11:44 – Stars are on the power play now for 30 seconds and they want a goal bad; Modano seems to be everywhere.
11:03 – Neal let a shot rip and Luongo just got the tip of his glove on it as the power play expired. That came moments before Kesler dropped to the ice, he was sliding to block a shot and Jere Lehtinen had to jump over him. The Stars forward’s skate hit Kesler in the lid.
11:03 – What’s up brudeur! Glad to have you along.
10:30 – Kesler just went to the dressing room to get his hat rack looked at, Lehtinen’s skate cut him so he’ll need some stitches.
9:50 – Hank got a stick in the face on that last play, so the Canucks will head back to the power play as Eriksson takes a seat in the sin bin.
8:21 – That was a weak power play by Vancouver. The Canucks are now 3-for-6 overall while up a man, but they didn’t have so much as a sniff on that last drive.

7:11 – Anyone else starting to really detest Ott? He just laid out Alex Edler along the boards, that was a clean one but the majority aren’t. Luckily he’s not the smartest bloke as Ott now heads off for holding.
6:09 – There have been a few Sparky, can you be more specific?
5:11 – Unorganized power play by the Canucks there and it ended with Ott stepping out of the box and right into Taylor Pyatt. That was a big league hit and Pyatt never saw it coming. Ott won’t get a penalty for that, but he should, that was a low hit. Low, low, low, low, low, low, low.

4:59 – I love when I’m wrong. Ott takes a seat for clipping, he joins Pyatt, Burrows and teammate Matt Niskanen in the box. The teams are at 5-on-5.
3:50 – That was incredible! Turco was way out his net playing the puck and Darcy Hordichuk didn’t let up as he went in on the netminder, he leveled him. That was unreal, I am in shock and how much I love that play. Trevor Daley didn’t like it, neither did any of the Stars, but this smile will be on my face for the rest of the night. Hordichuk heads to the box for the best penalty of the year.
3:36 – Daley also got a penalty there, so the teams are at 4-on-4.
2:24 – What’s the feeling in here about that Hordichuk hit? Does the goalie deserved to be hit if he’s playing the puck that far out of his net, or is he off limits everywhere?
2:09 – As Ivy eluded to, Kesler is back in the game after getting his head fixed. Not sure what the Canucks training staff had to do there, but I’m sure it wasn’t pretty.
1:10 – Grea chance by Hank in front of Turco, he waited just a little too long and the netminder was able to make the save.
00:00 – It felt like the Canucks had little to no offence in that period, but Vancouver had more shots (8) in that period than the team did in the first (7). Regardless, the score is all Canucks as they lead by a pair. Overall shots are 23-15 for Dallas.

20:00 – Funny that you said that about the cartoon character in that video canucklehead as I’ve been told I look like both John Krasinski and the lead cartoon character. Not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but at least I’m not drawing comparisons to Gollum!
19:29 – The Canucks are an impressive 25-0-3 when leading after two periods; I’m still not taking this game for granted. I want another goal or two.
19:11 – Are you kidding me Turco? Is that a joke? Marty just absolutely robbed Burrows with his paddle on the goal line. That’s his 13th save of the game.

17:34 – 4-1 CANUCKS – WHAT A GOAL, WHAT A GUY! Kesler just walked Darryl Sydor and potted his 23rd goal of the season. That was a great individual effort and it comes at the perfect time for the Canucks as they look to snuff the Stars.

16:30 – My bad Glups, they did call it quick but I don’t think the puck crossed the line at all.
15:37 – Just got word that Demitra and Vaananen were awarded assists on the Kesler goal, that’s Demitra’s second point tonight and Vaananen’s first as a Canuck!
14:19 – The Stars have controlled play since the Canucks goal, but they aren’t doing much with it. Luongo hasn’t been tested with anything tough in a while, let’s hope it stays that way.
13:00 – Since we’re so superstitious about saying the S-word when Luongo is playing well, should we do the same when someone has two goals and is going for the trifecta? Thoughts?
12:43 – Big league pad save there by Lui on Fistric, he got a hold of that shot too. What a smoker.
11:29 – Wellwood with a solid play as he cleared the puck away from Morrison as he tried to swipe in a goal off a nice pass. The Wellwoodian one is playing tonight!
10:54 – 4-2 CANUCKS – Willie Mitchell couldn’t contain Neal as he streaked to the net and Luongo missed the poke check allowing Neal to skid his 24th of the year under captain Lui.
10:23 – 5-years-old it is ExiledFan, let’s go with the H-word. In keeping with that topic, here’s a story I did two weeks ago on The Trifecta.
10:10 – Mitchell is in the box for roughing Neal; he was mad about giving up the goal so his emotions ran wild, but that’s a lame penalty.
8:25 – Solid penalty kill by the Canucks. They didn’t get pushed around and forced the Stars into awkward shots from bad angles. Me likey.

8:13 – I’m a Giants fan Canucks PWN stars, they’re a good team. I’m a sucker for my hometown Brandon Wheat Kings, but it’s a bit of a hike to go watch them play these days. I’m hoping to catch a few Giants game in the next few rounds.
6:23 – Time is on Vancouver’s side now. Dallas looks scrambly as they try to pull to within a goal, no chance the solid defence of the Canucks lets that happen on this night. The dumb penalties are over, let’s finish this game strong.
5:00 – I predicted at 3-2 win before the game started Glups, so I’m toast already.
4:42 – Kesler just streaked in looking for the H, but his shot was thwarted by Niskanen before it hit the net.
3:11 – Good call dave, it’s weird seeing Big Willie Style in the minus. Maybe we’ll pot an empty netter and he’ll finish even?
2:20 – RPM just went in on a 3-on-2 with Demitra letting a weak shot go, I think both he and Sundin wanted to set up Kesler for another big goal.
1:34 – Turco to the bench.
1:09 – Huge save by Luongo on Ribeiro as he was on the doorstep.
1:09 – Timeout Vancouver.
1:09 – Steamer works, that’s got a nice ring to it as well.
00:16 – 5-2 CANUCKS – EMPTY NET GOAL – Hank sent the puck down the ice and into the empty net. That puts the period on this game, what a beauty!
00:00 – Big win, huge win, mammoth win. The Canucks end their road losing skid with an impressive win over the Stars. A big W in big D, I loves it!

Oh btw, Minnesota has Gaborik back, and he already has a goal……and I still say he comes here this offseason to play with ex-teammate Demitra. Basically just a younger, speedier replacement for Sundin.
As long as he is healthy Gaborik is among the leagues best IMO.

I don’t really like the hit on the goaltender, but at the same time, you know what? I’m still mad that Hansen took a penalty for going for the puck while Turco sped out into the middle of the ice to get it as well and they collided.
That was in the 07 playoffs.
So yeah, I’m glad to see Turco getting hit for pretending he’s a forward, or at least a D man.
