PRE GAME
After knocking off the Montreal Canadiens to begin a stretch of five consecutive games against Canadian-based NHL teams, the Vancouver Canucks (27-21-8) hope for a similar result when they visit the Pengrowth Saddledome for a date with their hated rivals the Calgary Flames (33-18-5) in a key Northwest Division match-up.
Playing the fourth of eight games in eight different cities on Sunday, the Canucks might have thought they were still on the road at least for the early portions of the game given all the bleu, blanc et rouge supporters in the crowd. But by the end of the night, there was no doubt that GM Place was entirely pro-Canucks after the home team handed the Habs a 4-2 defeat in a game that did not see the Canucks take a single penalty.
You can bet the Canucks probably won’t go penalty-free again tonight when they take on the Flames in what should be a very heated battle. The Canucks come into the game sitting seven points behind the Flames in the Northwest Division standings and, if they have any designs on trying to make a run for the divisional title, they’ll need to secure two points especially since these two teams meet just one more time following tonight’s game.
FIRST PERIOD
20:00 – What’s up everybody? Derek here bringing you a massive divisional tilt between the Canucks and the Flames. This is a statement game for Vancouver if ever there was one and I’m thinking the Canucks will step up to the plate with a 3-1 win.
20:00 – Not sure if you read today’s Canucks Report, but there was some controversy this morning when Calgary coach Mike Keenan accused Willie Mitchell of using an illegally long stick. Willie just laughed it off at the time before responding by coming out for warm-up with a stick twice the legal length. I’m not sure who did the handy work but two sticks were impressively fused together to make a monster stick, to stick it to Keenan.
19:59 – And we’re underway in Calgary!
18:48 – Exciting opening scoring chance for the Canucks as they surged in on a 3-on-1 with Ryan Kesler flying down the left wing. He carried the puck in and elected to shoot but was thwarted by a Miikka Kiprusoff poke-check.
17:00 – Mason Raymond and Rob Davison are the odd men out again tonight with Kyle Wellwood and Shane O’Brien remaining in the line-up.
15:30 – Sorry Roger Marks, but I had to delete your comment. We’re a superstitious bunch and saying the S word might jinx our man Luongo.
13:55 – The first sign of some bad blood with Adrian Aucoin and Alex Burrows tangoing behind the play. The refs broke them up before anything happened – too bad because big bad Burr would have worked him over. Both players picked up penalties on the play so the team’s are at 4-on-4.
13:55 – That’s a bold prediction ExiledFan , but I like it. Wellwood hasn’t had any puck luck of late so he’s due for something, anything.
12:45 – The Canucks are controlling play in the Flames end right now with Sundin flexing his muscle and dictating the terms of play. He worked the puck out to Pavol Demitra, but his shot attempt was blocked.
11:59 – WHAT A SAVE BY KING LOUUUUUUUUUUUU! Matthew Lombardi got the puck in front and had a clear shot on goal, Luongo stood tall and sprawled to make the save. He even lost his stick on the play. Now that’s the Roberto we know and love.
11:31 – I’m going to say under 17kesler and nucky, you are a genius! I agree that Kipper will get a shutout, probably two!
10:09 – 1-0 FLAMES – Two Vancouver mistakes leads to a Calgary goal. Mitchell turned the puck over two passes later Jarome Iginla scooped it up before getting around Burrows and beating Luongo. That’s only Iggy’s fourth goal in the last 19 games against the Canucks, including tonight’s.
8:23 – Well said Ivy; all of our thoughts and prayers are with any Vancouver fans down under who have been affected by the wildfires.
7:16 – Mattias Ohlund’s point shot was blocked by Iginla, who turned and marched the puck down the ice. Ohlund was forced to take a holding penalty to prevent the Calgary captain from getting a nice shot on goal.
7:13 – That a boy Bertuzzi! On the draw in the Vancouver end, Bertuzzi interfered with Mitchell so he’ll take a seat for two or less. We’re back to 4-on-4.
6:03 – No worries LaVecchiaSignoraFan, just ignore TNIGZ and he’ll go away. I’ll be quick to ban him if he continues though.
5:48 – All the play has been in the Vancouver zone of late and shots are now 12-7 for Calgary because of it. No line has been especially dangerous for the Canucks so far with Jannik Hansen the only player with more than one shot.
3:30 – More pressure from the Flames, they seem extremely organized on offence tonight while the Canucks have yet to have a real dangerous rush since Kesler’s 3-on-1 early on.
2:05 – There’s a break for Vancouver. Iginla got the stick up and he hit Alex Edler in the grill forcing the refs to take him to the box.
1:30 – WELLWOOD? A PENALTY? AM I SEEING THINGS? Wellwood is off for high-sticking, that’s his first penalty since April 11, 2006, a streak of 159 penalty free games.
00:16 – 1-1 TIE – SHORTHANDED GOAL – RYAN KESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSLER! Just as Iggy stepped out of the box, the Canucks kept the puck in the Calgary end with Burrows blasting a shot on goal. Kesler followed up and tipped the puck in past Kipper. OH BABY!
00:00 – We’re all tied up through 20 minutes with shots at 14-12 for the Flames. That period was controlled by Calgary as most of the play was in Vancouver’s zone; the Canucks weren’t overly sharp on defence, luckily Luongo was.
00:00 – As I mentioned earlier, Mitchell came out for warm-up with a loooooooong stick to spite Mike Keenan, who accused him of using an illegal cue. Here’s Big Willie Style before the game.
SECOND PERIOD
20:00 – The Canucks are 5-4-3 when tied after one period and 7-14-2 when giving up the first goal.
20:00 – Good question 2hot4ice. Burrows is still paired with the Sedins, but no, that group as a line hasn’t done much. Taylor Pyatt is on the third line with Steve Bernier and Wellwood.
19:12 – Speaking of the Sedins, Daniel just let a rocket fly from in front that Kipper had trouble with.
17:19 – An almost-fight there between Darcy Hordichuk and Andre Roy. Hordi got a big swing and a miss in before Roy tumbled to the ice. What a waste of two good fighters. The teams are back at 4-on-4 for the third time tonight.
17:04 – Great minds think alike tero!
16:02 – Yikes. Kevin Bieksa had his shot blocked by Matthew Lombardi, who then skated in on a breakaway down the right side. Luongo was on the ball as he poke-checked the skater to prevent a shot on goal. Lombardi’s got some kind of wheels – zoom and he was gone.
14:14 – The Flames have the Canucks pinned in their own end again, it’s only a matter of time before they score with Vancouver tired and unable to clear the puck. When the Canucks do get it, they are just icing it; they are lacking some offensive chemistry tonight.
12:40 – The onslaught continues with the Canucks needing a case of Red Bulls to get back into this one. They look lethargically slow and are playing some sloppy, sloppy hockey. Someone needs to step up and spark something for the visitors.
11:25 – PERFECT! Is Burrows ever under Bertuzzi’s skin. The two just met in front of the Calgary bench and their pushing and showing escalated to Tuzzi dropping his mitts and taking on Burr, who wasn’t in a position to swing any bombs.
11:01 – Shane O’Brien stepped up to help Burrows, so he’s in the sin bin alongside Burr and Bertuzzi. Flames are on the power play, their third of the game.
10:57 – LOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! Big league glove save there as he stepped up and swatted down a Phaneuf shot that was headed top shelf.
9:25 – The Canucks are back at full strength after another penalty kill, their third of the game.
7:47 – There have been five power plays overall Calinuck, two for the Canucks and three for the Flames.
6:09 – What’s up craigmactavishSUCKS? Am I being called out?
5:47 – This game is on full snooze right now, so much for the playoff-type atmosphere everyone was expecting. Let’s hope the Canucks can finish this period the way they did the last.
4:51 – Canucks are back on the power play with Lombardi tripping up Edler. This is big, real big.
3:45 – Hands of stone (Wellwood) just missed a glorious loose puck that was floating in the crease.
2:56 – 2-1 CANUCKS – POWER PLAY GOAL – THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKIN ABOUT KESLA! Burrows did the dirty work getting the puck behind the goal and swinging it out front to Kesler, he swatted it out of the air and past Kipper. That’s a keeper.
1:45 – 2-2 TIE – Back come the Flames. Daymond Langkow got three whacks at the puck as Ryan Johnson was unable to clear him from the side of the goal, Langkow’s third attempt got the puck past Louie. That goal never should have happened as the Canucks had a chance to clear the puck, Burr takes the heat there.
00:43 – A goal against, now a penalty against – momentum has swung in Calgary’s favour. Hank is making the skate of shame to the box for hooking.
00:37 – We’ll get it right next game tero.
00:00 – That’s it for the middle frame, the teams exchanged goals to keep things tied up through 40 minutes. This was a rather drab period with Calgary controlling what little offensive play there was; Vancouver will need a more inspired effort in the third if a win is in the cards. Shots are now 31-25 for the Flames.
THIRD PERIOD
20:00 – The Canucks are going to win, that’s clearly not in question, but who scores the game-winner has yet to be decided. I’m taking a flyer on Ryan Johnson and I have no idea why. (I didn’t say Kes wouldn’t complete the hatty, it just won’t be the winner Ivy!)
20:00 – Henrik has 1:18 remaining in his hooking penalty so the Canucks will have to be sharp to start the third.
19:30 – Uh oh. Bieksa is headed to the box for shooting the puck out of play. I was thinking shorthanded goal Vancouver, now I’m just hoping the Canucks can kill off this 5-on-3.
18:43 – Hank is back on the ice.
17:29 – Bieksa is back as well, this could be the turning point for the Canucks as they escape that scary penalty kill.
16:29 – The challenge from LaVecchiaSignoraFan is accepted by Derek: the Canucks will clearly have an inspired effort in the third and that is why the win is not in doubt. You dig?
14:03 – After a stint of offence from the Canucks, the Flames return with some intense pressure. Vancouver needs to work on clearing the zone, they are trying to whimper the puck out and over the blueline instead of teeing it up and letting it rip.
13:08 – 3-2 FLAMES – Rene Bourque with rip-snorter through the legs of Luongo puts the Flames in front. That came moments after the Canucks missed a great scoring chance to take the lead.
11:12 – A big break for the Canucks as Adrian Aucoin puts the puck out of glass and he’ll serve a delay of game penalty. Scoring here is a must. Let’s pepper Kipper with shots until he just gives up and lets a weak one in.
10:31 – How did Kipper keep those shots out? Can anyone tell me? First he got the left pad on a Bernier shot from in the paint, then he ripped the glove up to take away a Sundin goal while on his stomach. Wowzers.
9:52 – I want in on that too nucky, don’t forget about little ol’ me.
9:18 – I am speechless. Kipper deserves the standing ovation he is getting right now as he used his paddle to ROB Wellwood of an open net. I can’t even describe that save, it was simply sensational. Honestly, Wellwood must have really peeved the wrong people off to have luck this bad, he couldn’t hit water from the beach.
9:08 – Shots are now 37-34 for Vancouver with Kipper coming up with save after save after save – keep shooting boys, he bound to crack eventually. Right?
6:45 – It’s officially crunch time if the Canucks hope to come back. If they keep applying the pressure they’ve had this entire period and they’ll be fine. Kesler just had a chance there; I don’t care about his hatty anymore, the points are all I want.
5:26 – Sorry ExiledFan, I missed that one. Unfortunately I do not have any peanut buttery chocolately goodness tonight – gulp.
4:34 – Popcorn is a go, I’m not crazy!
4:06 – Burrows never quits, I really love the way this guy plays. He and Iginla are chirping like best friends, I can guarantee they aren’t telling campfire stories though. Get em Burr!
3:30 – The Canucks are trying to gain the zone but are having no success, the Flames are simply responding with great rushes down the ice. Luongo had to make a big save there to keep this game within reach.
2:04 – Vancouver is still unable to gain the blueline, this is almost a joke right now.
1:24 – Luongo to the bench.
00:51 – 3-3 TIE – BOOOOOM! I DON’T KNOW WHO SCORED IT, BUT I LIKES IT! Bieksa let a point shot fly and it hit a few people in front before going in. What a big big big big big goal!
00:00 – What a finish by the no-quit Canucks. They earn at least a point but are hoping to make it two as we head to overtime.
OVERTIME
4:23 – Canucks with the early pressure yet only one shot on goal.
3:27 – Back and forth play with neither team able to get much going on offence. Sundin was just wheeling and dealing but lost the puck.
2:05 – LOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU! Huge save by Luongo on Phaneuf after Vancouver applied more pressure. Louie had to squeeze the legs to keep that zinger out.
00:26 – AUCOIN ROBBED BY LUONGO! That was as important as saves come with Louie squeezing the legs again. That’s his 38th save of the night.
00:00 – Hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to a shootout we go. Anyone else sweating?
